Three times faster than a 3-pin plug

A dedicated 7kW home charger fills a typical EV overnight and unlocks cheap EV tariffs. Charging at home on an overnight rate costs around 2–3p per mile, against 20p or more on public rapid chargers.

A 3-pin plug is the slowest and hardest-working way to charge: domestic sockets aren't designed for 12-hour continuous loads. A wall charger runs on its own protected circuit, installed and certified for exactly this job.

Good to know

Smart chargers pair with tariffs like Intelligent Octopus Go, charging automatically in the cheapest overnight slots. We set this up for you at handover.

What home charging costs to run

The charger pays for itself in the difference between home and public charging. On an overnight EV tariff, a typical 60kWh battery fills for around £4. The same charge on a public rapid charger costs £45 or more.

Drive 8,000 miles a year and home charging on an overnight tariff costs roughly £160, against £600 or so at standard home rates and well over £1,500 on rapid chargers alone. We set your charger's schedule up for your tariff at handover, so the cheap rates happen automatically.

What affects your home EV charger installation price

The fitted prices above cover a standard install. Three things can increase the price beyond a charger's own figure, and your photo survey prices all three into your fixed quote before you commit to anything.

Cable run length

The distance from your fuse board to the charger. Up to 10 metres is included in every fitted price; longer runs are priced in your fixed quote before we visit.

Your fuse board

Most modern boards take an EV circuit without any changes. Older boards sometimes need an upgrade, and your photos tell us before we quote, not on the day.

The route and wall

Along a wall, underground, or out to a freestanding post: the route affects time and materials. We conceal cabling wherever we can and always tell you the plan up front.

What every home installation includes

The fitted price is the finished job. Every install comes with:

  • Your charger, plus cabling up to 10 metres
  • A dedicated protected circuit with PEN-fault protection
  • NICEIC electrical certification, issued at handover
  • DNO notification to Northern Powergrid, done for you
  • App setup and smart-tariff pairing before we leave
  • Any grant checked and claimed on your behalf

How installation works

Photo survey & fixed quote

Send a few photos of your fuse board and parking spot through the quote form. You get a fixed, fully-fitted price. Most installs need no home visit first.

Installation day

Most home installs take 3–4 hours. We route the cabling neatly, fit and commission the charger, and leave everything tested and tidy.

Handover & certification

We set up the app, pair your energy tariff and hand over your certificates. We notify the DNO and claim any grant on your behalf.

After the install, you still call us

Handover isn't the end of the job. Your installation carries our 5-year workmanship warranty alongside the charger's own manufacturer warranty, and any question afterwards goes to the same local number that booked you in. If a settings change, a tariff switch or a fault ever needs attention, you speak to the engineer who fitted it, not a call centre.

Home EV charger installation questions

How much does a home EV charger installation cost?

A 7kW smart home charger costs £916–£1,142 fully fitted, depending on the charger you choose. Every price includes the charger, cabling up to 10 metres, installation, certification and DNO notification. Renters and flat owners can take up to £350 off with the EV chargepoint grant, which we claim for you.

How long does a home EV charger installation take?

Most home installations take 3–4 hours from arrival to handover. If your fuse board needs an upgrade first, the visit can extend to a full day. Your fixed quote tells you which applies to your home before you book.

Do I need off-street parking for a home charger?

A driveway or garage makes installation straightforward, but it isn’t essential. If you park on the street outside your home, a cross-pavement channel carries your cable safely under the pavement. We install these too, and council-backed funding is available in many areas.

Should I choose a tethered or untethered charger?

A tethered charger has its own cable attached, so you plug straight in. An untethered charger has a socket and uses the cable from your car, which looks tidier and works with any EV. We fit both, and we can add a cable to an untethered unit as an extra.

Can my home charger use solar panels?

Yes. The myenergi Zappi and Hypervolt Home 3 Pro can divert spare solar generation into your car instead of exporting it, so sunny days add free miles. Tell us about your panels in the quote form and we’ll recommend the right charger and set the solar mode up at handover.

Will my fuse board need upgrading?

Usually not. A dedicated EV circuit fits alongside most modern fuse boards. Where an older board lacks space or the right protection, we include the upgrade in your fixed quote. The photos you send with the quote form tell us everything we need to check.

Will the charger work if I change my car?

Yes. Every charger we fit uses the Type 2 standard that all new EVs share, so your charger stays put when your car changes. Untethered units take any Type 2 cable, and tethered cables can be swapped if a future car needs something different.

Do I need planning permission for a home EV charger?

Almost never. Wall-mounted home chargers count as permitted development for most houses, so there is nothing to apply for. Listed buildings and some conservation areas are the exception, and we flag that during the photo survey if it applies to your home.

Will my charger work with Octopus Energy and other smart tariffs?

Yes. All six chargers we fit support scheduled charging, and the Ohme units integrate directly with Intelligent Octopus Go so charging follows the cheapest slots automatically. We pair the charger with your tariff at handover, whichever supplier you use.

Can you fit a charger that isn’t on your list?

Yes. The six chargers we stock cover most homes, but if you have your heart set on a different make, tell us in the quote form and we’ll price a tailored install for it. The same fixed-quote promise applies: one price, nothing added on the day.

How soon can you fit my charger?

Once you accept your fixed quote we book you straight in. Lead times vary through the year, so we confirm the next available date when your quote comes through. Because the photo survey replaces a home visit for most installs, there is no extra appointment slowing things down.
